Why go for 2D when you can go for 3D? The MakerBot Replicator is a personal “3D printer” that allows you to build objects from scratch. The printer uses ABS (the substance that Lego uses in its blocks) and excretes it layer-by-layer until the desired object is built. You can design objects yourself or download model templates created by other uses from the MakerBot’s website (www.thingiverse.com).
The printer is only 9”x6”x6” so it’s compact enough to fit on your desk. But don’t dismiss it for its size– it’s capable of ‘printing’ objects as big as a loaf of bread. With the flexibility and customization it offers, you can create everything from door knobs to chess pieces. You can be running your very own factory in no time.
